I own a shop, and a 80 Malibu. I have a built 350 in mine, but I did have a small block 400 in it. It was a monster, and would out run everything I got up against on the street. You can put a 572 big block in it IF you wanted to really make it go. You will have to change the front springs to make it hold up the extra weight though. I see one at the drag strip that has a big block in it, and that car is just unreal how fast it goes. Mine makes around 550 horses, and is faster than I want to drive it. I can't even imagine what it would be like with a big block! You would have to beef up the frame, or it would probably twist the frame so much it would break the windows out. What I would do If I were going to drive it on the street is this; I would build a stroker, and you would have more power than you would ever need. Mine is Tri-Color Red with black interior, but I have a 79 that is blue. I'm building a strictly race car with the older one. I'm about 75% done on the restoration of my 80. Check out this site

You can put a 1,000 horsepower Smedling SBC in it, but you probably wouldn't be happy with the results; it's not a true streetable engine. I'd stick with a 383 or 427 inch SBC. It will go in without too much trouble and is available with 450 horsepower from various manufacturers.

A friend put a monster 100 over bore 454 engine in his Malibu Classic. First holeshot flexed the body and busted the windshield! Better stick with a small block crate motor. and 350 trans. Those 383 Chevys are hot and easy to make hotter. Of course there is no torque like that of a big block, but they do OK.

A General Electric J-79 jet motor comes to mind off the top of my head...but they're a little tempermental and hard to keep tuned.
