if its from the rear end itself is it a howling noice.. could be low on fluid or out of fluid.. both are dangerous to the rear end can cause the rear end to sieze up on the highway or blow the pinion out of the case.. which could result in the loss of a wheel and acle assemble.. look under the truck and see if the pumpkin is wet or if the cover has a hole rotted in it (common Chevy occurance)
The first thing to check is the gear oil. There will be a plug on the side (usually driver's side) of the center chunk of the axle housing, a little more than half way down. This plug will have a recessed opening that a 3/8" ratchet or small 3/8" extension will fit into (some later models may need a star socket, but I'm not sure). This plug needs to be backed out, then put your little finger into the hole. Bend your finger at the first knuckle and it should come out covered in gear lube, like a dipstick. If you do not detect any lube, you need to top it off.
Now the bad news. Usually, once they start making noise, they have run too long with the level low, and topping it off will only quiet it down if you're real lucky. If not, parts on the inside will have to be replaced, and this can run some serious money. It will need to be taken to a professional, due to the mic'ing involved.
Restoring 77 Trans AM; looking for places to buy interior parts any suggestions?
You might also want to drive it and see if the noise gets louder when you turn in one direction or the other. If it does, then you may be in luck, as this may indicate that it is just a wheel bearing.
Where can i get some mud flaps for a ford mondeo ST220?
Now, I am assuming that by "noise" you are referring to a fairly deep metallic hum. If you are meaning a "clunk", then it may just be a universal joint, or normal play in the ring and pinion. I have seen it be just normal ring and pinion play with the engine idle set too high. Then you will get a "clunk" when changing from reverse to drive or vice-versa.

Troubleshooting a problem with a 2001 acura tl?
i own a shop, and first you will need to narrow it down to what it is,it could be bad bearing or a pinion gear or even a bad axle,i have one tore down right now that needs all new bearings in it ring gear and pinion gear bearings, and they don't come cheap either, but you,ll need to narrow it down a little it could even be a bad u-joint in it causing this to happen there's so many things it can be that if you can narrow it down a little it will be a lot easier to help you on this one, good luck i hope this helps.More Questions & Answers ...
