Question:
I read they were second to last in reliability. Is this because they cost so much to repair, or are the cars actually flawed? If so, is the flaw due to bad engineering or poor parts and what are the general flaws (due to electrical issues, transmission, engine)?

yes, from own experiences VW's are HORRIBLE as they get older. Never get one. Anything from water pump to electrical system. Everything just falls apart if the car is over 5-10 years old. I think its because of low quality. Its surprising because its a German engineered car but its the worst possible in reliabilty. And German cars in general have electrical problems. But the Volkswagen Group is the richest auto group in the world so something is fishy, because they make horrible cars. What is the tee fitting comming from a water pump on a1999 regal 3800 engine called?

I have a vw GTI, and the Air bag had to be replaced 3 times, The heated seats, quit working, and had to be fixed, you can not even change a light bulb, by yourself, you have to take it to the dealership, unless you know someone that knows how to reset some kind of codes. I had a window leaking problem.
Just really a lot of problems, and not being able to change the lightbulbs, I think is crazy, that should be a safety thing that you can do yourself. Very dissapointed with it. Also a spark plug went bad, it was still under warrenty, so I took it in, for service, they only changed the one that was bad, a month later, another one failed. They really should have replaced all of them at the same time. So I would say the service , is not good quality. Poor parts. And not being able to work on them yourself, is why they are rated so low.
For the most part due to electrical issues and other things not working.
