I own a shop, and have seen this before. Look to see if you have any vacuum hoses that run from the engine to the transfer case. See if they are split where they plug on, came off, broken, have holes in hoses, or collapsing. Check fuses, and the relay. If you still don't have 4 wheel drive, then the switch you put on it is no good, but you need to rule out everything else too.
