With proper care, a diesel will usually last longer and get better fuel mileage. I have seen diesels at 500,000 without major problems, but they were all highway miles, and they were serviced religiously.
That said, you can get 300,000 + out of a gasoline engine with the same kind of care.
Let me go with the diesel. They may cost more for the maintenance but the engines seem like they roll forever.
