I have a neighbor that is selling his car and he is offering me 700 for it and it runs but he was telling me that the transmission was out and they put a rebuilt on it do u think its worth that much for an 1985 and also it might need shocks and the paint is in good condition but there are some rust spots. please help not sure if tis worth that much

Not really, Personally I rather pay a little more for a rust free body. Those are hard to find where I live and appear to be the same scenario where your at too. Of course you do know that mid size gm only gets around 12 miles to the gallon gas.

You can't buy anything for $700. If it runs and has a rebuilt transmission in it, go for it. I would get some sort of varification on the tranny, however. I would think that it would be worth close to that on its own.I would offer $699.99 and see what he says. He might just take it.
depending how many miles are on it you didn't say, the man probably has that much in the rebuilt transmission, you can probably get 4 shocks for it for less than $100 and patch up the rust yourself and you will probably have a decent car for under a grand, I'd go for it, of course you could always make a lower offer first.

Hell yea! Im a chevy man, so I kno that its worth it. I kno so many people that would jump on that quick? Is an old man tryin to sell it? If yes, that usually means he is the 1st and only owner, took good care of the car, and if your real lucky, it might not even have 60,000 miles on it. I got my cutlass (have a chevy motor in it) for $360 and it was worth every penny. Also, it cost around $500 - $700 to get an automatic tranny rebuilt, so hey. Do the math. Im not sure what state you live in but in California that car isnt worth nothing except scrap metal, due to smog laws. In a state with little restriction on smog 700$'s is a great buy but ask him why he is selling it, is it because it wont run correctly or what. If the rust is all the way through the body no body work is expencive for someone that doesnt just bondo over it if you must get it painted DO NOT FOR ANY REASON TAKE IT TO MAYCO (not sure on spelling)AND GET THE CHEAPEST PAINT JOB it will bubble up and it will s**k. if its surface rust it can be sanded out, shocks are no big deal. Make sure if you have to pass smog that it will pass smog the 80's through the 90's are a pain to pass smog on any GM vehicle. Bring her to NY. You only get "piped" if it's a 1998 or newer car of truck. If your Caprice has the 4.5 liter (262 cubic inch) motor it will last forever. The 305's are somewhat of a weak sister. Thin wall castings low nickel, manganese and chrome in the block and heads results in quick valve guide wear. De-tricked cylinder heads are equipped with little intake runners and valves. If the trans. and motor is OK I'd go for it. Shocks are cheap and literally fall on that car. HEY! a caprice for only $700.00 now that's a deal!!!. Don't listen to that Japanese loving guy a Caprice is a great car. I own one and its the most reliable car I have ever owned!. Toyota is a sardine can of a car. Nothing beats a Chevrolet!.My Caprice is a great open road car and gets good gas mileage too! On the highway at 70 mph I get between 28 and 29 mpg.
