Question:
The motor's in a 1989 Bronco. It's running really fast right now, and I need to know how to turn down the idle. I don't have a tach, but I'd say it's idling at about 2000 rpm. I can put it in drive, coast, and it'll upshift to 2nd, and cruise at about 25-30 mph.

You need to clean the throttle body. It gets a build up inside it and won't let the butterfly return all the way as it should. Another thing is your idle speed shouldn't ever have to be adjusted, unless it got turned for some reason. If you will look at the throttle body you will see a screw down inside a hole on the top of it. This is the idle adjustment screw. Before you turn it, check for a vacuum leak, as in a hose is split where it plugs on, broken, or just plain bad and sucking air. The idle speed does not go up on its own, and you will find a reason for it. Inspect the EGR valve, as this is often the cause of it due to it sticking in the open position.Glad to help you, Good luck!
There is an idle adjustment on the carb. It probably has a small spring on it. to keep it from moving. If you look where the throttle cable attaches to the carb, it should be below that.

That engine should already be fuel injected if I am not mistaken?if it is check your IAC ( idle air control) it may be clogged it can be cleaned with carb cleaner. Check the voltage on you TPS (throttle position sensor) it should be just under 1 volt. also check your EGR Valve- I have seen this a few times although it is rare. check vac pressure. Good luck.
Desert selection on the AMC Dashboard?
Sounds like the upper intake manifold gasket is broken and sucking in air to make it idle fast. With the engine running you can might hear it, or passing your hand around the upper gasket you may feel the vacuum leak.More Questions & Answers ...
