AOD transmissions were famous for burning out the overdrive bands and direct clutches, especially on the earlier model year applications such as yours. The symptoms would be no third or overdrive gears. If you are going to have it rebuilt, I would strongly recommend replacing the parts with the updated beefier bands and clutches used on the later model years where possible. Some of the internal parts of a later model 4R70W transmission will work on yours, if I understand correctly. First and foremost, check your transmission fluid level and condition. If it's burned or dirty, pull the transmission pan. If you see filings, or broken pieces, the transmission needs to be rebuilt, or replaced. I own a transmission shop, and I can tell you this; Yes, unless the transmission is low on fluid, it will have to be rebuilt. There is two reasons a transmission will slip. One; the fluid level is too low, and two; the clutches are worn down too far for them to engage enough to move the vehicle. 99% of the time (for some reason) a transmission will start slipping right after the fluid & filter were changed. I hate that I can't tell you anything better, but it sounds like it's seen it's better days.Glad to help out, Good Luck!
