Help needed with gear shift release?

i apply the brake to release the gear shift but the button will not release, what can be wrong

Start by making sure the brake lights work. If they do the brake light switch is good, next is to see if power is getting to the shift lock solenoid with a test light. If power is good to the solenoid and it doenst release, replace the solenoid.
