If you've always wanted a Porsche, I wouldn't hesitate! I own a 2003 Boxster and a 2001 911. The Boxster actually handles better than the 911. Put the top down and enjoy the Boxster! The 2003 is also a great year, since it got a boost in power (over the 2002) and you get a glass rear window. Also, you have a glove box and a nicer stereo.When we purchased our Boxster, I looked at the BMW Z4, Honda S2000, Nissan 350Z Conv, Mazda Miata Speed, Mercedes SLK and the Chrysler Crossfire. The choice was obvious after driving all the cars.

Don't get a Boxster!! Get a 911 Turbo!!That seems pretty reasonable, although I would expect something closer $40,000. Without seeing the car or knowing the options, I have to assume its pretty bare-stock. Of course that's perfectly fine.

The Boxster is a fantastic Porsche and it’s a good entry-level Porsche. If this is your first, than you cannot go wrong.

Porsche, despite detractors, I have found to be very reliable. I have owned a few, mostly 911s, and I have had no major problems. My oldest, a 1989 911 Turbo, has had no major problems. I have fixed it up quite a bit since its purchase, but in terms of the engine, no problems.

Now, it’s important to understand what you are purchasing. A Porsche is a different breed of car. Many people drive it for different reasons. Don’t buy it because it’s a Porsche with snob-appeal, that’s just wrong, it takes the “purity” out of Porsche and you end up getting a machine that wasn’t designed for what you want. A Porsche is perfection, is the marrying of design, performance and quality that is essentially unrivaled, save the other German car companies.

The Boxster is on the low end of Porsche, but it is still a Porsche, which means you’ll be going 0-60 in less than 5.5 seconds, you’ll be able to take turns and corners at high speeds and never lose stability.
Personally, I do not like the Boxster, not because it doesn’t have as much performance as, say a 911, but because as a cabriolet, it does not handle as well as the Cayman, a coupe. The Boxster is also disappointingly common, for many it’s the Porsche they can attain, versus the real, visceral Porsche experience. This is why I only buy Porsches that are unique. You have to appreciate a Porsche for what it can do, both my 911s can outperform any car on the road, even the 1989, just because Porsche has achieved that perfection of design, performance, and most importantly to me, it can handle.
Of course, the Boxster can handle and its very reliable, qualities that I love, but I still wouldn’t get one. For $29,000 I would suggest purchasing a BMW. First, for that much money you can get one almost new, which is great and you can ease yourself into the performance car market. Driving a Porsche like it is supposed to be driven takes practice and the fact of the matter is that 85% of Porsche drivers do not drive a Porsche like it should be driven.

The BMW will give you a better deal anyway. The BMW warranty greatly exceeds the warranty of the Porsche, as you get free service and maintenance for the first 6 years or 50,000 miles (which ever comes first) and it doesn’t matter if you buy used or new, you still get the warranty.

You could get the Z4 roadster which will actually outperform the Porsche Boxster, not the Cayman, the Boxster. And if you buy used, the Z4 will be about the same. BMW has the same amount of power, handles phenomenally and marries design and practicality. The BMW has more trunk space, more function than the Porsche. Also, if you purchased a 3-Series, like the new 335i, you will actually be getting more power than the Porsche at 306 bhp. Trust me when I say that the 335i will beat most cars on the road, sedan, coupe, it doesn’t matter. BMW is a good step to Porsche; it was how I did it. I started with a BMW and still have a few, but it eased me into Porsche. You wanted an objective opinion, and as much as I love Porsche, I love BMW too, but I think it’s a better choice for your first German car.
