Answers:
how do you chand the oil in a 2002 xterra?
I have seen many things in my life, and I can honestly tell you this is in fact possible, but not very likely. In order for a bearing to seize enough to weld itself to the axel, and the housing at the same time, is not very likely. Reason would be; the bearing would have to weld itself to the axel, and to the housing in order to break the axel. It could happen, but the noise would be very loud, it would smoke, and unless you were brain dead you would notice it before it got to that point. With my background, I would be considered an expert in this field, and I would have to say this is not very likely. If one just kept driving the vehicle it could in fact happen, but there is no way you would not know what was going on long before it reached that point. For an axel to break a couple of things would have to happen. It could have what is called an air pocket in the casting that results in a weak place in the axel, thus when pressure is applied it snaps at that weak point. Another reason would be just plain abuse. Reving the motor up high, and slamming it into gear would cause a sudden twist to the axel resulting in a breakage. Gettting one wheel off the ground, and suddenly grabbing as it came back down would do this. I have also seen someone start off on dirt spinning real hard, and moving from the dirt to pavement causing a quick traction when it hits the pavement, can make it happen.
In order for a bearing to seize it would have to loose all lubrication, grind for a while, seize up, and snap. There is just no way this would happen, and the operator not know something was taking place. Something would have to stop either the wheel, or the other end of the axel dead in its tracks to snap it.
A bearing gets really loud when it looses lubrication, and for it to reach the point of seizing, it would be as if you were applying the brakes to that wheel, and would probably slide the wheel before it broke anything. So No I don't think it would happen that way.
Glad to help you. Good Luck!

Yes it can , Anything mechanical can fail at any time without warning however , 06 ford truck seizure means no gear oil and yes it would happen very fast, and the real question is why would this happen, it is not normal, what so ever, and would need to know more info to tell you why it happened Ford makes the best differential in the world, not to mention Trucks, and all Nascar Racing cars use ford differentials all Chevy dodge Toyota and so on all use ford in Nascar, I have seen hundreds of these things in my 27 years as a mechanic, and there are only a few causes for this and one of your answer cover that pretty good, and you don't always hear it when it happenes it can happen instantly and just break, I did not like the brain dead part in his question he speculating it would make noise before it happen not always true,Yes it can. I have seen a seized bearing break axle,s. I have seen them break a water pump housing and even saw one crack an alternator case one time.
I bought my first car and Im freaking out...how can I contain my excitment?
If the axle bearing is frozen, it will eat through the axle and eventually the axle will break, or usually you will notice an axle seal leaking. If the axle bearing gets rough, it will eat through the axle.YES!
