I have a chance to buy a Volvo @ a great price. The guy converted the axels over. I'm wondering if this is why it jerks and jumps when you first pull out in it. It's a 1984 automatic.

First try by cleaning the fuel delvery system. You should be able to by a good cleaner that you just add to your gas. Check the plugs and wires, cap and rotor and get an oil change. Check the air and fuel filters too.
