Third world country's such as those in central and south America, have a large volume of Diesel mini trucks. It is rare to see a gasoline engine. Various factors involved...thats how some people have been asking for an economy car with a diesel. At the $13k-21k, imagine throwing in a diesel engine option for around $4K...not many will buy into it, or even enough to justify mainly because most shopping in that segment, are doing more out of economy and budget, so to throw them a $4K option, just throws out that concept out the window.

So far the most fuel stingy small pick-up is the Ford Ranger, with an I-4, mainly because it only weights around 3200-3400lbs. Throw in more toys, 4x4, and a diesel option, and it'll take more "work" to haul around the heavier vehicle, where maybe the diesel won't work well enough.

We will see an introduction of diesel engines starting with the F-150 next year...but more implementation of diesels will be seen on larger cars/trucks like the Expedition where there's a larger profit margin, and the benefits will be greater, than on a smaller vehicle.
