I just bought a 1980 monte carlo dirt track bomber. It was missing the starter so I bought a starter for a 1980 monte carlo 350 motor. Now it wont engage right how can I tell if I got the right starter or even if for sure it is a 350 chevy?

Assuming it has the original engine, go to one of these .com addresses: carluvers or vehicleidentificationnumbers to get your answers. Have the vin #s on hand.
Or on the engine block there will be a set of numbers that a Chevy dealer or parts store should be able to use to ID this engine.

I suspect you have the right starter though because you were able to bolt it on.

If the starter gear is binding up when you try and start the engine it means it needs to have shims installed between the block and the starter to get the starter gear to match up with the ring gear.
