I just bought a 1980 monte carlo dirt track bomber. It was missing the starter so I bought a starter for a 1980 monte carlo 350 motor. Now it wont engage right how can I tell if I got the right starter or even if for sure it is a 350 chevy?

I suspect you have the right starter though because you were able to bolt it on.
If the starter gear is binding up when you try and start the engine it means it needs to have shims installed between the block and the starter to get the starter gear to match up with the ring gear.

You may have a 350 and you may have the right starter. However, you may need to shim it to get the clearances right. Did you notice if it had shims when you took the old one off?how do you tighten a 1991 honda 250x four wheeler chain?
