My oil pressure seems low?

Question:
I have a '98 Chevy 1500 4x4 350 v8...and the oil pressure seems to be way below 40 at idle...normally when the engine is still cold it's up where it should be...about halfway between 40 and 80. I figured this was due to the oil being thicker because it was cold...if i put a heavier weight oil in the engine next oil change, will it keep my oil pressure up where it should be? also the truck has 106,000 miles.

Hi i have got a audi a4 tid can i put a chip in and where can i get 1 from?

i have a 97 z71 w180,000, i use 10w30 every 3000. oil psi is appx 25@700rpm(idle) and 55@2000rpm(hwy) when warm. yours sounds fine. don't change visc. as it will make your engine work harder and doesn't get to the top end quick enough, especially on cold days.

Proper Engine Oil?

You know, by todays standards 106,000 miles is not that many. It would be normal for an engine with wear on it to have low oil pressure at idle due to the extra space in the bearings. Yes thick oil is hard to pump, and when its cold its even harder to pump, thus low oil pressure. If you have as much as 15 lbs. of pressure at idle speed you are still safe. The rule of thumb is 10 pounds of pressure for every 1,000 RPM. will be enough to keep it lubricated. In cold weather one wants to use a thinner oil, and in hot weather one wants to use a thicker oil. One thing to bear in mind is, in cold weather even your gauge will be lazy, and may not reflect the actual pressure. Do you hear the lifters making noise when you run the engine? As you know "never" rev an engine up that is cold. Just let it warm up for a few minutes before trying to go with it. When the engine has warmed up, and if the pressure is in the normal range, then I wouldn't worry about it. The idea is to get oil to the top of the engine as soon as possible when it is started up. If you hear excessive noise when it is running just after it is started, then you may want to be concerned. Remember cold thick oil cannot be pumped, and in fact looks like a thick glob. Put a new quart of oil in the freezer, and take it out after 4-5 hours, and try to pour it out. Can't make it flow can you? Synthetic oil will flow good at any temprature. Thicker oil is not always better, and can in fact cost you an oil pump if it is too thick. It is hard on the pump, the cam gear, and the timing belt, as all these components must turn the oil pump. The crank turns the cam, the cam turns the distributor, and the distributor turns the oil pump. Cold makes oil thick, heat makes oil thin. The idea is to either do something like add a heater type dipstick to keep the oil warm, or use a lighter weight oil. Real cold weather is hard on an engine, just like real hot weather is hard on an engine. You can rest assure you are not getting a true reading out of your gauge when it is real cold.
Oh yeah, thicker oil will hurt your mileage to the point you can notice a difference. This you can bet on.
Glad to help out. Good Luck!

how do u install a convertible top on a 86 mustang?

I would stay with 5w-30 oil. It may sound like a thin oil, but most engine ware occurs at start up. A thicker oil will take longer to get up to all the bearings. Change the oil & filter. I pulled up the spec. for your engine:Oil Pressure (Minimum at Normal Operating Temperature)

Why do you only have a sports car section? The GT is a supercar! A sports car is a Honda S2000. Get it right.?

And as you see it does not take much oil presure to safely run your engine. Hope this clears some confusion up. Michael

Why does my son's 2005 WRX SUBARU not have any way of telling if oil is needed, by some kind of light on dashb

while many true points have been made rember this is a 350 the same design that was first introduced to us in 1955 aka 262 just a bigger bore and a longer stroke, but basically the same design as a 1955 model with a few upgrades like fuelinjection etc,if you are running something like 5w30 or what ever oil that is recmonded by the manfacture, with this many miles i would step up to 10w40,should not affect your fuel mileage to the extent that it would be noticeble, and just my personal theroy big companies like gm,ford, etc dont have your best intrest in mind by useing the lightweight oil they recemend, after all these days it all about selling cars, not making the one you have last

Mustang Question?

no putting in a heavier weight oil will just hide the problem not help. do the following and if this does not help then get it check by a mechanic, 1: check under your car for oil leaks if you see any find out where they are coming fromand if poossible fix it,2: check your oil pump, if it is bad then you will need to replace it asap before your motor blows a rod, and last make sure you do have oil because if you do not that also will effect your pressure. this actualy should be the first thing you do. having a car with hi milage does not mean you got ripped off or anything just means you need pay more attention to its needs. try a high milage oil next oil change
