Question:
I have a 2000 VW Jetta. Lately when I'm stopped at a red light or at an ATM machine or something out of no where the engine just revs up really high, sometimes past the 50 RPM line! And the car wants to move. Luckily my foot has been firmly on the brake each time that this has happened. Its scary and really dangerous..if it caught me off guard I would shoot up and smack right into the person in front of me! It doesn't do it always, just sometimes. Any idea what it could be?

Your computer helps control the idle speed by controlling your Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid. It lets a calibrated amount of air into the engine to control the idle speed. In addition, there's a mechanical throttle plate that opens and closes when you press on the accelerator pedal. Both things affect how fast your engine is revving when you come to a stop. I would have the throttle plate and bore cleaned as well as the IAC. Also, have the technician check and make sure the throttle control cable and accelerator pedal are not binding. How difficult would it be to change an engine in a 2001 jetta 1.8turbo?

It sounds like your engine speed sensor is bad. I was having similar problems on my beetle. Not to that extreme but similar. If it is intermitten it will not be picked up on a Diagnostic. Ask to have it changed. Is there any iformation on 2006 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 Access cab V6 automatic truck?
