I own a 1997 Sunfire SE Coupe with a 2.2L and I have a problem with an Emmisions Fuel System Fault.?

Question:
It seems to be that the gas cap is the problem but I don't know. My check engine light comes on at weird times, but if I fill up my tank and replace the cap with the 3 clicks, it goes away. But my other problem is the fact that when I get to a half a tank of fuel, then my fuel gauge doesn't report properly. I have heard of newer Sunfire's having that problem with the circuit board. Is this the same thing or is it something worse?

You have 2 problems...gas cap & fuel gauge are 2 different things.yes try a new fuel cap it sounds like it's not sealing.Your other problem sounds like the fuel sending unit is worn out.(inside your fuel tank)you have to remove the tank to replace this.Good luck
