What are the consequences of reving up the engine up to 6k rpm on idle for a couple seconds on a 98 GTI VR6?

Question:
As i was driving on the Freeway downhill i had it on neutral, and i was curious what would happen if i would put it on cruise control. so i did and the rpm went up to 6000 rpm i hit the brakes immediately. otherwise i could have damaged the engine.

What is the redline set at? If its under 6k then you will screw up your car much faster, but if the redline is at 6.5k or 7k, then you will burn much more fuel, and your engine will wear much faster that if it was kept at a lower rpm.

How do you reset the oil light on 2004 Alero?

FYI......there is a reason for every car to have a redline. According to cam specs the powerband will only go so far, after that youre just spining the motor with nothing else left to give in which many cases you start to screw up the motor and quickly i might add.

For Electron6 need more help?

that was not a very good idea i most say but i wouldn't lose any sleep over it if some thing was going to happen it would have then and there But saying that it is never safe spin up a unloaded engine aka out of gear at high rpms
if the internals are out of balance even slightly things can fly apart ever easy
valve float can all so be a factor
