Check the NADA used car guide for the model and year of the car. It will tell you how many $$ to discount for mileage. Any discount means high mileage for that year and model. You can find the guide at most public libraries.

vw beetles are great cars. i had a 2001 turbo beetle, hands down my favorite car. most people with them have anywhere from 150k to way over 200k miles on them. make sure the timing belt has been replaced cuz that is important and expensive. transmission service is @100k. the regular maintenance is not expensive. good luck and enjoy your beetle!More horsepower for a 1994 suzuki sidekick?
This day and age, that would be considered low mileage. Not knowing the year, and assuming its the newer version, you will be in very good shape. I am a used car dealer, and go to auctions weekly. I cannot tell how many cars come threw with 200,000 plus miles, including VW's. Get it before someone beats you to it.In my opinion it is better to buy another car.

for the 'new beelte' yes, that is very high mileage. The cars are garbage at 50,000 miles.I do agree that vw makes decent deisel engines, but if it is not a deisel, The price you think is good now, will just skyrocket because of the horrible electrical systems in vws.

I like to use 15000 mi per year as the average use rule, anything more and I start asking questions. The usual answer is "Oh, don't worry they're all highway miles" but this guy doesn't have a house that backs out onto a "highway" so I'm suspect...hmmm.You have to look underneath ALL cars you want to buy. Look at brake lines, fuel lines, general rustiness of the underside. Look at the brakes, (actually take the front tires off) and look at the pads, flex lines, rotors. If the car is 1-2 years old these things should still look new. The underside shows its age, the shiny paint does not.

having owned 2 gtis and currently a jetta (also have worked on more VWs than I can count) i would not buy a used VW with over 50k miles. when you start getting up into these higher mileage VWs (77 is high for VW, i dont care what you say), it is going to be time to replace things and spend lots of your hard earned money. i would say no on this one, there are many others out there.What did you expect for mileage? For there to be none. Then I would worry there IS something wrong from day 1.
