Why is overdrive stuck off in my 83 volvo dl?

i have a 1998 jeep tj. i want to change the suspension but i dont want to go too aggresive.what do u recomend?

this problem has several possibilities, most likely first:
1. wires that go up the shift lever broken and terminal connections at the O/D switch
2. O/D relay, remove glove box, the relay is just inside opening towards the center of car and is clipped into a stiff metal bracket. remove from bracket and retry [the stiff bracket fingers will distort the relay causing it to not function] if it now functions just lay relay where you found it {don't clip it into the bracket] note color of relay. for your model as i remember orange replaced green as the update relay later models were white[for automatics] manuals with O/D are now drk. blue.[if memory serves]
3. the solenoid [these are expensive for both auto or manual trans] if all the above is in order you should be able to hear an audible click from the solenoid when the button is pushed if not test for power with a test lamp [harness side with the solenoid dis connected] if you have power and it switches with the push button the solenoid is bad[ automatics have a kit available from I.P.D. U.S.A. that eliminate the solenoid completely, if you tow or live in mountains you probably should not use the kit as o/d can no longer be turned off. other than that it works perfectly.
good luck. this may become time consuming but it is not a hard repair.

Trying to figure what type of engine GM-355909 maybe and what type of car it came out of?

I wish I knew. My dad has an 82 DL and has issues with this for a long time. Sometimes he has to turn the car off, wait and turn it back on. I'll be watching this thread...and good luck!

1987 ford 4x4 problems?

If you are referring to the arrow light on the dash and you have an auto trans than that is not overdrive. The first thing to check would be the relay if it has one that is the first and most likely culprit. The second would be the solenoid it may be giving a false reading and need to be replaced.

Are there any Vauxhall Omega MV6 owners on this site?

I had that problem with my 85 GL about 10 years ago and it turned out to be the solenoid

Rotary engine swap?

The overdrive on that year has always been a source of problems. I had one and ended up selling it as it was to expensive to fix.
