Could be one of two things, First a battery could be old, or dead. Or next, the starter is bad. Test the battery first to see if its ok, then if so, then get the starter pulled and get that tested. Good luck.

Is there an AWD car available that gets good mpg (green preferably), has good cargo space & doesn't cost 40k+?

When the battery is almost dead, the starter solenoid will just click but nothing else happens. Also if the battery cable connectors are corroded you may have the same indication. You maybe able to get it started using a screwdriver to make contact between the battery post and the cable connector attached to it while someone else tries to start it. Otherwise you should remove the connectors and clean the contact surfaces, reconnect them and try again. When removing the connectors, do the Negative (black) (-- ) terminal first, then the Positive next (red) ( + ). After cleaning, reconnect in the opposite sequence, ie. red first. If that doesn't work, try the headlights and horn, If they work you probably have either a bad starter, bad cable, or maybe the relay. If you have been running the vehicle and it is hot, let it cool down with the hood open for a while and then give it a try. The starter may be too hot and dragging the armature in which case you need it repaired of replaced
