I have a question about a 1997 buick regal gs?

there are hoses that come off the engine. it is smoking from underneath them. i am worried that it is something major. any ideas would be a help.

Assuming the smoke is coming from the metal, they this would indicate that there is oil getting on some hot engine parts. This could be a poblem if there is a risk of fire (near the exhaust manifold or spark) it is also possible that the smoke is from the oil breather, this hose goes from the top of the manifold to the air intake, it take hot oil fumes from the top of the engine into the engine to be burned with the fuel. If this hose has a hole in it, you may see some smoke leaking around it. It would be best checked out, if there is a lot of oil and dirt buildup on the engine block, it will increase the risk of an engine fire. You could spray it down with engine degreaser (after the engine has cooled down enough so you can comfortable toudh it) then spray it with water to rince off the degreaser. Try to keep the water away from electrical components and air intakes. After you have done that, start the engine to warm it and speed up the drying process. This may fix the problem if it was just from an excessive buildup of oily grime, If it stops for a while and then you notice the smoke again , it may indicate an oil leak that needs attention.
