it may be the switch but before you go into taking it out to replace it check the relays on some you have two fuses one for high beam an one for low beam check the ground on the light themselves that usely the break in the circuit.What is the maximum towing weight for a ford focus estate 1.8 diesel?
remove the expensive switch, careful examination will reveal the wires that go to the headlights, as opposed to the other devices.You can then check them for voltage +/or continuity through the switch. My 30 years toyota experience says its the switch.
