I can say that the drive of Yaris is very smooth, but I think it is a bit small model. It is a kind of cheap model with good quality. There is a problem on speed. After 130-140 km it is starting to shake which is making me feel unsecure. But generally it is a good car and worth of its price.

Good points:
Gets 60 to 75 mpg. Cruises very happily on motorways and is easy in town. Noise level about half that of a Mazda. Acceleration and pulling power from the small (turbocharged) engine is as good as most other cars of equivlent size and class and better than the Nissans). Ergonomics are very good. Car tax is £40 per year. Road holding excellent. Reliability very good (3 year guarantee on the mechanical bits).
Bad points:
Small boot, if you slide the clever rear seat forward you can make boot bigger but your passengers will have to shrink.
Radio is not exactly hi-fi compared to the VW ones.
It has adequate headroom for tall man and driver's seat will adjust for long legs (at the expense of the poor blighters in the back) but it is a bit narrow around the elbows for a fat driver.
Spare wheel is designated as temporary use only and has narrower tyre than the others so speed is limited to 50mph.

It is true that toyotas are usually priced higher than competitors. The yaris starts cheap, but it doesn't have side airbags, power windows,abs, and a lot of helpful systems standard. I have always like toyotas, but in looking for the best deal, the honda fit seems to be the most reliable, fuel saving, inexpensive, versatile, and mildly sporty car (if you get the sport version, you get power windows, all airbags including side curtain airbags, air conditioning, abs, and an automatic transmission with paddle shifters standars for about $15,000, The standard version is about $13,000). I think side curtaain or side airbags are important because without them, many cars get poor side crash ratings.People here are talking like its boring but compared to its rivals it isn't. Apart from rock solid toyota reliability the engine is zippy as hell. Hey its small and slow, but it performs like a small and slow car with 300cc more engine capacity. vvt-i baby! And everything has been thought of, you won't find one annoying thing about the yaris unless you're used to driving bigger cars.

I'm more a Corolla person as the Yaris seems a bit small, even for a single guy like me who doesn't haul a lot of stuff or people.
But one thing I will say about Toyota (and to some extent, Honda) is that the price range dictates size and features-- never quality. The same build quality goes into the Corolla as goes into the Camry and Avalon. This is in contrast to GM where the price also dictates quality. You won't find the same build quality in an Aveo or Cobalt as you would in the Impala or Malibu. (This is not to pick on GM, Ford is also guilty of it.)

I'd say spend a day out test driving each, preferably going back and forth between the two. The salesmen will hate it, but it's not their job to love it -- it's their job to sell you a car (and they'll probably each try harder knowing you could potentially buy the "other" car.)
The engine is kinda small, but for reliability and resell its the best. You will get your money back when you resell, they hold the second hand and new car market by the throat.

I was considering buying a Yaris Liftback as my first car. However, lack of leg room (I'm 6'1") in both the front and especially the rear seats really turned me away from the vehicle. I think it's one of the coolest looking cars on the Toyota lineup, but the company's Scion brand had way better subcompacts. I ended up buying a 2006 Scion xB and consider it and its xA sibling far superior to the Yaris. Both the Scion xA and xB are both based on the Yaris platform and all three use the same Toyota 1NZ-FE engine. Also, for only a few thousand dollars more, the Scions offer more bells and whistles STANDARD than those of the Yaris.However, the xA is being replaced with the xD (a five-door Yaris) and the xB is being redesigned for 2007-2008. So, if you want an xA or old xB, you'd better hurry.
My opinion: the Scions are a better buy than the Yaris. That is, if you don't mind driving in a unique-looking vehicle.

The fuel economy, sportiness of the car (especially RS), and legendary reliability (Toyota is number one in JP Powers) put it on the top of any serious small car shopper.
