Your fuel filter is just forward of the right rear tire under the car, looks like an aluminum small soup can 2.5 inch by about 4 inch. Do not change it. VW list the gas fuel filter as life time on the newer gas VW's. Don't listen to the aftermarket service manuals that say to change the fuel filter they are wrong. Ask your VW dealer, or go read your owners manual on the fuel filter life. But if you want to change the fuel filter be careful the clips slide sideways to release the ends connected to the fuel filter. If you pull on the fuel connectors you will break the clips. This is very important clean off the fuel filter connectors then be very carefull if you try to release the little slide loaded clips the wrong way you will also break them. When done right you more push the clips part of the connector sideways while pulling gently on the connectors to remove them from the filter. It comes off easy when the clips are released correctly. If you are pulling real hard you are doing it wrong. If you break the clips on the fuel filter connections you will have to buy the complete fuel line set. I know I learned the hard way. If you are geting bad fuel mileage it is probably your MAF (mass air flow)sensor needs cleaned or replaced this is common on the VW fuel injection. I would take the MAF sensor off clean it with a good contact cleaner like Noflash from the LPS company or one of the cleaners at the parts store listed as safe for the MAF sensors, and reinstall. Usually your engine light is on, and if you run a scan with say a scanner at Autozone it will read bank running rich. Clue is spark plugs ceramic insulator looks black from too much fuel and fuel mileage will have dropped to about twenty instead of being around thirty. The MAF sensor is about $80 after market on the web close to two hundred at VW dealer so clean it first. Don't worry about resetting the engine light if you fixed the problem the engine light will go out after several cycles of the engine going through a complete cycle. The problem you will know has been fixed within one tank of gas if you fixed the problem your fuel mileage will be back and the light will go out after approximately five full start, run, and cool down engine cycles. Try autotechparts.com for your parts search to find the right part numbers they have both the filter and the MAF part numbers, then go any where to find your best price if the MAF sensors is bad.This is very common on the VW.
