Had loads of different answers about this.
Some say 13cm, some say 16.5 cm and some say 17cm.
Which is it?
I want to replace the standard front and back speakers.
Preferably, i would like to put 16.5cm speakers in if they fit
Will they, though?

This vehicle has eight speakers in it, so they are of various sizes throughout the auto. Best bet is to use a website such as Crutchfield or the like and then find out what size speakers they say will fit your car.2001 Chevy Blazer V6, 4dr., 2wd. How do you....?
As an aside, I have an entire Monsoon system from a 2002 GTI [wiring, amp & all speakers] that is in perfect condition and would drop right into your Golf [I had the exact same Monsoon system from the factory in my 2000 Golf GLS when I bought it new]. It's super-sweet :)
