I am looking into getting a new engine put in my 1996 Jeep Cherokee SE. It has the weak 2.5 litre right now, hooked up to a 5 speed manual transmission. I would like to go with something with a lot more horsepower but i don't want to modify the transmission, is that possible? What would fit without major modifications? How much will this cost to completely install? Is it really worth the cost? Any help or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated....thanks!

The ax-5 transmission in jeeps with 4 bangers is a light duty transmission, and can barely hold up to hard use with the 2.5. I should know...I'm on my third. Once this one goes I'm switching to an ax-15. So basically a 4.0 just running around on road will destroy it. I don't even think anyone makes an adapter for this. So not only will you need a new transmission (ax-15, nv3500, nv4500), but you'll need a new computer with wiring harness, intake, exhaust... Basically, it'll cost you more to convert than to just buy another Cherokee with an inline 6. I've even heard some people say it's easier to swap in a chevy small block v8 than an i6.what are the latest cars in the world?
oh ya it is the best thing to do is buy a 4.0 inline 6 that comes in the other jeeps. if you really want to go a little crazy you can buy a stroked out 4.0 which will actually be qa 4.6 liter but it makes about 60hp more and 60ft lbs more then the stock high out put 4.0 that is if you want to spend about 4 grand for a motor. but if you dont want to do that either you can find a cheaper cherokee with a 4.0 and just swap motors or go to a auto wrecking yard and find one but with that one you are gonna have to replace almost everything in the motor so either way it may cost you 4 grand or close to it its your call but those are your options if you dont want to touch the tranny. and for the record it is worth the cost if you want a kickass jeep.What the hell is Mahindra and Mahindra??
I know that it sounds crazy, but there's a viper engine somewhere on Ebay-motors for an OK price. No tranny, though. I doubt that the jeep transmission would handle 500 HP. Sorry, just an idea.i need to know how to turn off my lights in a 2003 gmc sierra truck?
