Does anyone know how much an '88 mustang GT would be?
It's probably a solenoid not downshifting correctly until after you stop.Best bet is to take it to your local dealership and have them look at it and diagnose it. They have the best experience with them and can fix them without replacing or rebuilding the entire trans if possible. A local shop that has well qualified technicians and good diagnostic equipment would be my next choice.
How much does it cost to get a performance exhaust on a vw and is worth it?
My LAST choice would be a transmission specialty shop. They've been known to push a rebuild or a remanufactured transmission when it isn't necessary. They also use tactics to keep the vehicle there such as getting your permission to go into the transmission to check and see what's going on. Sure, they'll do that for free, but then, when they tell you it needs replaced or rebuilt, and you want to take it somewhere else for a second opinion, they'll charge you to put it back together so you can take it or have it towed away. The charge is enough to make most people tell them to just go ahead and do the work they say it needs.
I'm not saying all are that way, but I've seen enough I'd stay away from them. They're there to sell transmissions.
If the dealer or local shop tells you it needs replaced, then call around to get the best price, tell them what price you found and see if they can come close to it. Chances are, they'll try to so you don't go elsewhere, but if they can't get close enough, then pay their diagnostic charges (usually about $75 or so) and take it to the least expensive palce to have it replaced with a remanufactured unit.

Do not have yours rebuilt, the remanufactured units are done under more controlled circumstances and come with a much better warranty (reman unit should be at least 3 years, 36k miles, most are better -- rebuilding yours is often only a 90 day warranty, and usually not much cheaper).

Oft times, the elelctronic sensors in the transmissions can get dirty or worn out and cause problems with shifting.
Best bet would be to take your card to the local tranny shop - like an AAMCO and get it checked out. also, check with the dealer, too... some will do work on them and you MAY not have to pay for the complete repair - as it was a problem part... there were many cases of warranteed fixes after the warranty was expired... there are a lot of TSB (technical service bulletins) out there about this transmission.
