I presume you want to go to automatic. Then that is when the problems start. You have to maybe replace the steering column and possible the drive shaft. Go to a junk yard and search for one.

Change from one manual tranny to another. While you are at it, put in a new clutch, and turn the clutch plate while you are at it. If you can change oil and see if you can use synthetic oil in the manual. I have seen my dumb friends just change over and then 6 months later the clutch goes out. I warned them, and now they know.

On either one, blow out the transmission line from the radiator to the transmission. Use Synthetic if possible (you might be on a tight budget). Put a magnet in bottom of tranny pan if there is not one there. Newer cars have them.
