The number change came in 1988 when the new (for the time) body style came out. For the times, the truck was new and innovative (at least by GM advertising standards). The old body style had been around for 15 years (1973 - 1987) and the only visual differences were the grilles. Of course 1980 was a split year and the early '80 had the round headlight and the late '80 had the large single rectangular headlamp. Then in '81, they went to the stacked rectangular headlights. I've got a book that you need to get a copy of if you like Chevrolet/GMC pickups and can find the book. I've had mine a few years. I got it at Motorbooks International and it is called "Chevrolet Pickup Color History". It tells a lot of information about the various body styles of Chevy pickups from 1918 thru 1994 (i said I've had this one a while). I just looked it up and the first year was 1999. Both GMC and Chevrolet dropped the "C" and "K" designations in 1999. Chevrolet C/K and GMC C/K were used from 1975 through 1999.The 1st C/K 1500 was 1988.
