Is the BMW M3 really automatic?

Question:
The M3 is my dream car but I was told that the automatic function on the car is not really what you would expect from a regular automatic transmission. I heard it is even worst to drive in the city.

Ford Forums?

THE SMG IS NOT AN AUTO! it has an automatic mode whereby the gearshifting is done for you however do not confuse this with a conventional automatic transmission, what it really is a hydraulic manual transmission; this means that its a manual with no clutch, the car takes over the clutch function for you so it's as if the clutch is there but an automatic foot is controlling it. This is why when you drive the car under intense throttle you get shift shock just as in any manual transmission. You can also change the transmission from auto mode into the shifting mode which does not require that you know how to drive a stick because the car controls the clutch not you however the difference here is you must use the steering paddles or the shifter to change gears and the hydraulic clutch will engage them. As far as driving the car in the city, your talking about a certified race car of course driving in stop and go traffic is a drag however this is why BMW created the "auto" mode and under moderate acceleration the car performs as if you were the best stick driver in the world: smooth and without jerkiness. So hopefully you all learn something about SMG IT'S NOT AN TRADITIONAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, IT'S A STICK WITH NO DRIVER CLUTCH INPUT.

WHICH USED CAR TO BUY, ACURA INTEGRA,HONDA PRELUDE or LEXUS IS SERIES?

There were a few fully automatic 5 speed transmissions in the 1995 M3. It was very well calculated for higher engine speed shift points and accurate downshifts dependent on throttle demand. Most of the M-3s were 5 speed manuals until the 6 speed manual showed up around the year 2000. In the meantime there was an SMG transmission which had a manual shift, but no clutch pedal to operate. The electronic SMG (Sequential Manual Gearshift) transmission used an electically controlled clutch with upshifts and downshifts controlled by paddle switches (+ or -) on the steering wheel. This was a neat arrangement and I have heard it was fairly reliable; yes, it does cost more to repair or replace an SMG transmission/clutch. City driving with an SMG transmission should be a lot easier than with a manual trans. and standard clutch. Suggest you go for a test drive in one, and see for yourself.

Why is my HONDA 's shift gear stuck in park?

The SMG is a electronically driven clutch. You CAN put the car in "auto" mode and it will shift for you, just like a regular auto. But, as my buddy told me that owned one, it is not as smooth as a real auto.
