There was a clutch but you did not have to use it when stopping. Did the gear shift have three positions? I keep thinking it is "Tip-Toe"

Fluid drive, back in 34 they had a vacuum clutch, that allowed stopping at a light and leaving the gear in high, with your foot on the brake. On a level plane you could then proceed as the gear ratio permitted. I seem to recall fluid drive in my mothers 52 dodge.
