regardless of what anybody before me says, a faulty o2 sensor WILL NOT; i repeat, WILL NOT cause a cat low efficiency code. if one or both has failed, there will be a seperate trouble code for each o2 sensor. do not think that replacing an o2 sensor will fix a low efficiency code, because it wont. common miscoception here. vw has a problem with cat converters, and they have extended the warranty on them. however, each vehicle has to meet certain criteria. its too complex for me to go thru all the diff. scenarios. there has to be proper maintenance, no history misfires, and a host of other requirements have to be met before vw will warranty a cat. some models are 8/80k, and some are 10/100k. if you are over 100k miles, no warranty at all.i have worked as a tech in a vw dealership too long to not be right on with what i am saying.

Rear oxygen sensor behind the cat is bad typically. Occasionally it means the catalytic converter has failed, but more often than not its just the rear O2 sensor has failed.

being an '01 you probably haven't changed out the O2 sensor yet, usually when i do a tune up on a vehicle i like to change the sensor out which is once a year. that is 99% likely what the problem is. after its replaced discoonect the battery for about ten seconds reconnect and your off. the other 1% might be a bad cat. converter if it smells like sulfur (rotten eggs) thats the culprit. good luck.

You need a new catalytic convertor period. If it was an 02 it would have an 02 code. You may notice NO difference in performance with a new one unless you current one is clogged or broken up inside.

Catalytic converters get plugged up. So what will happen is you can start the engine and it sounds good. Then when you try to put it in drive it dies out. Air has to go thru the converter, then thru the muffler then out the tail pipe. You put ANY obstruction, like a banana like Axel Foley did in Beverley Hills Cop, and you have back compression and the engine shuts down cuz now where for the exhaust to go.
