The battery gage on my dash on my jeep wrangler red lined suddenly, why would it do that?

the battery gage yesterday went from normal to compleat red lining and it was in the middle of driving.

Might be nothing but better be safe just in case. Go to Napa and have them run a test on your alternator in case the regulator is fried. Then have them check your battery.

You didn't say which way the guage goes (up or down) If it goes up it means your voltage regulator in the alternator is failing and overcharging the battery. Theorhetically the battery could explode if this continues too long. If the guage drops to zero It meant the alternator isn't charging at all and you're running on only battery power.

If the alternator and battery check out OK then you probably have a bad ground somwhere in the circuit of the volt guage. The easiest way to check this is to get a volt meter and put it on the battery while the engine is running. If the meter and the guage don't match your guage is at fault.
