Question:
I am wondering if I should get my timing belt replaced. A mechanic told me that if it is a chain belt, you shouldn't need to change it before 300 000 KM.Timming belts which are made of rubber, should be changed every 100 000KM. I presently have 127 000 KM on my car.

Your car has a timing chain.probably a rubber belt,if so should have been changed at 80,000,that is normal life for rubber blts.

No you don't have a rubber belt, you have a metal chain and two gears inside the front of the motor. These still can break. If you are unsure if the chain and/or gears are still good, check the play in the chain by rolling the motor forward and rearward by cranking on the harmonic balancer bolt. If there is a lot of play you will feel the crank moving without the cam and associated valve mechanisms moving. If this is the case, replace now and save yourself a lot of money as if these break it can ruin a lot of other components inside the motor. Good luck. How to install a deck in my 2000 grand cherokee?
Get a 2ND opinion its very unusual to have a metal chain belt i have only heard of a few old cars that have them but if it turns out to be a chain belt then its fine to wait but i would think you have a rubber belt which would need replacing so get a 2ND maybe even a 3rd opinion just to be safe you don't want your timing belt going out on youMore Questions & Answers ...
