Personally I wouldn't do either, but I would say Highlander because Kia has horrible reliability. I'm giving you a link to JDPower which is the authority in automotive research data which states Kia is near the bottom in reliability along with VW and a few others.Both vehicles are pretty much boring to drive, uninspiring and soul-less...specifically with the Highlander which when I think Toyota, I just think the person has given up on the automotive world and just wants an appliances. But between the 2 you asked, I would say the HIghlander is the better buy.

Although the HIghlander is towards the end of it's life-span..meaning, it'll be replaced shortly since it hasn't had an upgrade in about 4-5 years already, so usually the cycle means it's coming up soon.

The suspensions on these vehicles are probably the most glaring difference.
The Sorento will ride stiffer and is slightly bigger. It has more of a truck feel. If you would prefer to drive a truck over a car, this will probably be your preference.
