it depends on taste. If you take the Honda Civic you'll have a large and wide variety of aftermarket parts for it for you to make the way YOU want it too and make it look many times better tthan what it used to be. And since they are good in fuel mileage, a honda civic doesn't bad if you can find one that hasn't been treated badly.

The Mazda 3 already looks good from the factory so you really don't need to do anything to it except adding some new rims and tires, a bit of chrome here and there if you like, keep it nice and clean, a nice sound system, and your all set.

Either is good for a male or female driver as both are popular to each gender. They are pretty equal in size/quality/function, so test drive both and see which you can get the better price on with the features you want. I do prefer the Mazda 3 and love the blue and plum colors.
