How much would it actually cost to rebuild a Ford 5.4 Triton v/8 engine?

This engine has been smoking and has lost it's power. It only has 96,000 miles on it. It's in a 97 and, comes in a van 8,600lbs high capacity.

used engine is definantly the way to go and it will still be exspensive (crate motor from ford is best, but would run about 4.5 to 5k). I would say it probably would run about 3 to 3.5k as these engines are not cheap and the labor on a van is quite intense. pay extra for a warranty that will cover labor as well, if the salvage yards will not do this do not buy from them, the better ones will provide this warranty. these engines are pretty good and I have seen many last 300k so you need to take a close look at your maintenance practices, 96k is just getting broken in for most of these. are you sure it needs an engine? symptoms could be a stuck open or leaking injectors and a catalytic converter starting to plug up. have it checked by a competent tech if you have not.

These engines are really reliable.They had problems with them leaking oil in the rear but not blowing.As far as plugs comming out you 97 was not involved in that..Before engine replacement i would get the engine checked out.Get a leakdown test done to see if rings are bad..get compression checked.Might be something like PCV not working proprely.Just suggestions before you spend big bucks
