Check the level in brake master cylinder. Fluid low??...if so most likely that it needs brake pads and/or shoes.
(this is the light in dash right)
if not...rear brake lights.....faulty switch at pedal

Almost all cars that have a brake light (I assume you mean the one on the dash) are reffering to the parking brake. Not your actual brake that you use for driving. Is your parking brake on? How long have you been driving with it on? Any noise you may have heard during this time was your parking brake grinding not your regular brakes. Shop around a bit you should be able to find a shop that will check your brakes for free. Make sure your parking brake is all the way disingaged. This may make the light go off even if it was just alittle bit on.
