About a month ago I've seen a 1971 Mercury Marquis 4 door for $850, it has a 429 4 barrel motor and it has olive green exterior/white vinyl top and it runs/drives great, is $850 a bargain?

I do know that the 1971 429ci V8 4 barrel's have 360bhp (which is alot of power)

This is not a desirable car in terms of collectability, but if the engine is in good mechanical condition it is well worth the asking price...I would look the car over for rust prior to evaluating the engine. Check the floor boards, rear frame rails and gas tank. Also look at the brakes, see if the rear wheel cylinders look wet..if they do they will need replaced. Safety first...I would then do a compression test on the engine to see if it is pushing good compression..175 to 210psi would be ideal and all 8 cylinders should be within 10 to 15% of each other, check to see if the tranny shifts well ..If so...snatch it up...fill her up... and have some fun, the 429 is a torque monster and will prove a blast to drive....The gear ration in that car will allow fair gas mileage on the highway....I have a 2001 Toyota Carolla and the engine light stays on. Why?

I would buy it for the engine alone, that would be perfect in my Ranger street project. If it drives good i would go for it, classic car and easy to work on.

You have to consider the gas millage for car. If you buy it for daily use, I advice you not to buy it. If you buy it for your collection, it is great!

I had an 85 Mercury Marquis I bought in 1990 that I only paid $1760 for and it was a bargain. It did have high mileage, but I drove it for 8 years before everything started going wrong with it. It was my favorite car though. Your talking about paying half of that now, and that was over 16 years ago. I doubt too if that car has the automatic seats, windows, and the switch for the automatic headlights too. Even if there isn't any rust visible on the outside of the car, I am sure the floor boards are rusted through.

I think that $850 is a bargain for a '71 Mercury considering how hard to find those cars are, I would spend $1000 for the engine/transmission alone and the 429 4 barrel's are very powerful motors, I wouldn't buy the car for daily use cause they do drink alot of gas, I'm a big fan of the luxury cars of the late 60s/early 70's and they are easy to work on.Is the Mercury Cougar going to come out with an anniversary addition?

Well, all cars are subjective to personal preferance. I'd buy that car at that price in a heartbeat if it could be put back on the road without too much work, and if you decide not to buy it, give me the info and I'll take it. However, it is not a suitable car for everyday use. Gas milage is beyond bad. Parts are hard to find since it's not still a common car. Overall, if you get it, please take care of it; they are really nice cars, fairly quick and comfortable and easy to drive. If you need a practical car, this isn't a good choice, but I don't need a practical car, so if you decide against it, please give me the contact number and I'll buy it.

Yes , the heads would be the "D00E" castings , nice large ports. In 72 they went to the "D20E" with small ports .Is the clear taillight conversion for the 1991 Nissan 300ZX 2+2 N/A any good?
