Anybody have experience with a 1984 Mercedes Benz 300SD?

I am looking to buy a 300SD and was wondering if anyone has any experience with these vehicles? Is there anything particular that I should investigate on the vehicle?

The most annoying problem they have is the transmission delaying shift and sliding into gear. See how long it takes to shift from reverse to drive and back again from drive to reverse. If delay is too long it may have tranny problems. Other issues are the power windows need to work. Usually the switches are the culprit but sometimes it could be the motors. Look fro rust on the rear swing arms and make sure they are rust free. Although not super expensive ~ $300 the are a PITA to put in. Where are you located? What year is the SD?

I ran an 83 300D for a few years. I was always tinkering with something on it (fuel leaks mostly), but it was a solid vehicle. 100 miles round trip almost daily except for the chicago winters. I could use it around the house in winter because I could plug the engine heater in over night and leave it in the garage. But if I drove it to work I had to worry about it getting too cold for the diesel fuel.
