Its a stock 350 with a Quadra jet 750 carb and the gas mileage is 9-11 mpg. Its been tuned up and runs really good, but Im just driving it from gas pump to gas pump. Maybe a smaller carb or go fuel injected?

Depending on what you want to do with the car, you could get a drive train out of a later car, GTO, Corvette, LS1, LT1, LT4 and install it with an aftermarket computer, this will get you better gas mileage plus all the power, that's if the body and the frame are worth the work, or change the carburetor to a 650 or smaller and drive like you can't afford the fuel.I've lost my manual can't figure out how to open the hood of my 06 dodge charger. someone help me.?

OR, you could also install a t700-r4 tranny if you have the $$$Mandatory emissions minimums forced GM to rethink and retool. 1978 was about the time GM realized drastic changes were necessary if the Corvette was to survive. Why try to improve something that GM couldn't with engineers and specialists on its payroll?

9-11 mpg is bad esp for a small block with q-jet.
i suspect you may have ignition issue, those old hei systems were notorious for having distributor advance mechanisms sticking. also make sure vacuum advance is working. take dist cap off and see if you can manipulate rotor and it returns. if you can't then mechanisms and weights are stuck. need to clean and lube them until free. also check to see if vacuum advance holds vacuum if not then replace. all items are relatively cheap at any auto parts store. then set ignition timing i'm guessing it's about 6-8 degrees btdc although you might go up as much as 10 depends on advance curve. i like setting total advance personally.
