The gas mileage for a automatic 2002 Hyundai Elantra off of fueleconomy.gov is 24/33mpg. The reliability and safety of the Elantra should be average as you are getting what you pay for really.Will a 98 sunfire 2.4L tanny fit my 98 sunfire 2.2L?

The 2002 Hyundai is an ok car. You can't compare it to the new Hyundai cars. The gas mileage is good, but not up to par with Honda or Toyota. The reliability is good. Safety is not too good. I have had a 1999 Hyndai Elantra GLS for 5 years now and I have few complaints. Mine has 144,000 miles on it. During the summer, gas milaege is 25-30MPG and during the winter it is 20-25MPG. At 98,000 miles the transmission went (fortunately it was covered under warranty). Since then the other major thing to go has been the front axils (Both went about 5,000 miles ago). I drive 45 miles each way to work and back. I average about 25,000 miles per year. The O2 sensor is dirty and gives me a code which I cancell out with the computer I bought from PepBoys for $300 (it is $99 each time to get the shop to do it).
