There's a little plastic part which cancels the signal when the steering wheel is returned straight.Unfortunately these plastic parts wear down or break off on older cars.

It won't fail an MOT because of it, so you're best option is just to live with it. They're not cheap to replace.
How can i find out what kind of engine i have for my truck just by using the numbers on the motor?
Unfortunately Ford used plastic parts in their turn signal switches. You will probably either have to live with it, or replace the entire unit.I have a pontiac sunfire and i need to know which indicator light is on?!?!?
It happens on all Ford cars, just cheap parts wearing out. You can live with it or replace the unit.turn signal cam needs to be replaced. located under steering wheel. will be a horse-shoe shaped plastic white object.

if its anything like the fiat and alfa set up you will probably find that you need a full quarter turn of the steering wheel for it to cancel. When turning right you will turn more than when your turning left. try it when your stationary and if tou put your indicators on to right and do a quarter turn and you'll here it click then do the same for left. you'll soon notice when driving that you don't need a full quarter turn of the wheel when turning left.
Why does the check engine light flash on a 1997 mazda 626?
when you signal a plastic part on a spring pops out of the stalk internally and when you turn the wheel it hits against a solid piece on the steering coloumn which pops it back, this cancels the signal.Problem is ford made these cheap and almost all escorts suffer from it. you can take the unit apart and check the springs are working as they should, you can also check the piece they hit is in working order.
How can I get the seized torsion bars loose on my 1995 4x4 Suburban?
But you'll normally require a replacement of the stalks or the bracket they hit. the stalks are over £60 from ford and £20 but secondhand ones are just as likely to break. im not sure about the bracket.
I replaced the stalks twice on an escort with 2nd hand units both in the end had faults. Its easier just to remember to cancel yourself.
oh and the links in the answer above are for an American escort, so your parts are different.

The plastic cam inside the mechanism breaks, so the lever doesn't get pushed back to the off position when it should.
It is possible - with quite a lot of effort - to repair it. New ones are expensive, but they seem to turn up on Ebay fairly frequently for a tenner or so.

The little plastic bit which the steering wheel hits to cancel the indicators is broken in one direction. You need a new switch (comes as indictors/wipers/hazard switches) which are about £54 new.More Questions & Answers ...
