Question:
Considering a 1999-2001 Mercedes E320 wagon. Replacing an Audi Quattro Wagon which I love, but am tired of the pricey maintenance and wouldn't mind a little bit larger car for the family.
- Is my mechanic right in saying that the maintenance is less/cheaper than the Audi?
- Is the V6 good for 200k miles with proper maintenance?
- I love the Audi for the tight and taut handling and tank-like build - how does the MB compare?
Answers:
I don't know if you can get 200K miles out of the motor, but you should know that there was a class action against Mercedes due to these motors sludging up on petroleum oils. You should only use synthetics with this motor. The good news may be that it could be covered by the extended warranty resulting from the class action, if a major engine repair can be considered good news.
I would change mechanics. He's clearly has designs on your wallet.

About 3 weeks ago I bought a 2000 E320 with 60,000 miles on it. So far I love the car. I talked to my pricey, but very honest Mercedes mechanic, whom I know for 20 years, and he told me not to buy 1999 or older, because there was a problem with transmission, which was fixed in 2000. I trust this guy, I have been taking my other Mercedes cars to him for 20 years. He also said to stay away from 4-matic, unless you really need one.
I think that with PROPER maintenance a 2000 (or newer) E320 will last more than 200K miles.
As for handling and build, an E320 is more of a "tank" than Audi and handles like a dream.
The most important thing is to take a car to your TRUSTED mechanic before you buy it. If a seller doesn't want you to take a car to YOUR mechanic, you do not want this car. I'm sure you know this.
I heard from 1990 to 2005 Benz have problems with computers.I don't like the V-6s they copied from Chrysler,I wish they had kept the straight 6s which would go over 400,000 miles.
