Saturns have generally been reliable, specifically the SL series. The L-Series have their share of issues.How do you install windows in a jeep wrangler hardtop?
GM is trying to move Saturn upmarket, so in that effort, they have/are in place of replacing many of their vehicles. The Ion was really just a Cobalt, Saturn-fied. The Media has never warmed up to the Ion mainly because complaints stemed from it's low-rent interior, lack luster performance, and the central gauge pod in the intrument panel.
But Saturn loyalists value dealership relations and overall appreciation towards customers which is what has helped Saturns' loyalty.
Now in GM's effort to push Saturn upmarket, the Ion will be replaced by the european "Astra". The Aura just replaced the lackluster L-series sedans which never took off. The Vue will be improved substantially. There's also the Sky which has done quite well and alow with it's copy the Pontiac Solstice, it has catapuled it's sales leadership dethroning the Mazda Miata/MX-5, and a few other intries like the Outlook which just debuted.
What do you normal people think about my Civic?
Ions engine has been proven for many years already, so it should be faultless overall. Haven't really heard/read many complaints other than the ones listed. Maybe you could haggle the price down a bit because th car for it's year has quite a bit more miles than it should, and there's a new vehicle replacing the Ion, so you'll be driving something a bit "old" when the fresh Astra debuts.

I have a 2004 Ion(bought new) as well. As a car, it is pretty good, and we haven't had much trouble with it(and I like the "central gauge pod").Just ask the guy you are buying it from if he knows the radio lock-out code(if it is a factory installed radio) and if he does, make sure you get it before you leave.
We had an issue a few months back where we changed the battery, only to find we couldn't get the radio to work after that. I called the Saturn dealer and they said I had to bring the car in(for me a 60 mile drive) and pay them around $30 to hook it up and find the "code" to unlock the radio. After much searching around in vain on the internet for an alternative solution, I begrudgingly set up an appointment, wasted the tank of gas to get up there and back, and forked over the $30 to get the radio back up and running.
They did write the "code" in my manual before I left. ...How generous. For something they should have given me when I bought the damn car.
Saturn, good car, incredibly lousy service. Unless you're rich enough to not care what they charge you for.

Define "good" - is it as good as Honda Toyota? Nope. Better than other gm masterpieces? Absolutely. The fact that it lost over 50% of its value in three years compared to Hondas or Toyotas that usually do it in about 6-7 years is a good food for thought.
