Question:
I just bought a used 2003 Nissan Xterra yesterday, 3/22/07. It has 41,000 miles on it. I just put gasoline in it this morning, and now notice that the check engine light is on. If it is the gas cap that is causing this light to be on, how do I make it go off? I am disappointed, and don't want to be so early with this purchase. Can anyone help me?

How are the honda civic 2005 EX 2door vehicles?
If your gas cap is cracked it should be replaced. If it's not, just make sure it clicks 2-3 times after you close it. It often takes a couple days for the light to go off.
If it doesn't it is possible the previous owner/ dealer may have cleaned the mass airflow sensor with carb cleaner, which is a no-no. The car will run okay and it won't hurt anything - it could use a touch more fuel. There is a special MAF cleaner sold at Autozone.
I'd take it to where I bought it and nicely ask for their pledge to cover whatever the problem is. Most people or dealers understand that things that happen within a week are things they should work with you on.

If you don't put cap on tight it will cause light to come on. If it doesn't go off disconnect battery turn on lights for a minute or two to drain voltage stored in computer. Turn off lights connect battery turn key to on (not start) let computer recalibrate two to three minutes. Then you can start car, however if light comes back on you may have other problems and that's why they sold car.More Questions & Answers ...
