Where is the gas tank release switch located on a Chrysler 300?
The '85 series "chevy" speedometer is still controlled by cable. If it's hooked up @ the Gage in the dashboard, and to the transmission. Then it may be worn-out. the easiest way to find out is with an either 3/8" wrench or 10 millimeter. There is a small retainer bolt @ the tail shaft of the transmission where the cable is connected. Remove the bolt and turn the cable until it releases from the tail shaft housing (some transmission fluid will come out) gently turn the squared portion of the cable clockwise.
If you have some help, ask them to watch the Gage. If it moves the needle, it's hooked up @ the dash. Pay attention to the end you are holding. It's not exactly squared, but you'll be able to tell if it's worn. A cable replacement could fix your problem. If not then the little gear inside the tail shaft could be worn. Either way your only looking @ 30-40 dollars for parts, and probably 1-2 hours in labor.
I hope this helps you.
any suggestions or help please!?
What did you expect on such an old vehicle. What size engine is a 4.6 liter V-8 Ford? Is it a 289?
Check to see if your spedometer cable is screwed in on both ends. If it is, replace it and if it still doesn't work, your may need to buy a individual guage or replace the one you do have. It is an older pickup so it is possibly the cable was making noise and the previous owner unhooked it to keep it quiet.First, do you have cruise control. If you do find the control unit under the hood. You can check both ends of the cable there. A lot of times on older vehicles this unit seizes up causing the cable going to the trans to break, hope this helps.
P.S. Is the truck 4x4, speedometer runs off the transfer case.
it could be the plastic gear in the tranny. i had an 85 chevy pickup and the end that the cable connected to it was stripped out.
