Actually, in an automatic transmission car they both serve the same function. They are hydraulic fluid for the internal components to use to do work, and to a lesser extent they are also lubricants for the systems they serve. In fact, some cars these days actually call for transmission fluid in the power steering system, rather than special power steering fluid. In a manual transmission, the only real purpose for having fluid in there is to lubricate the transmission. Most manual transmissions use gear lubricant, which is like a very thick version of motor oil. However, some cars, including my Saturn, use automatic transmission fluid in the manual transmission.
