Some play in the wheel bearings is normal. There has to be some or the hubs will be too tight. You have the possible situation of either you are just starting to get wear in the bearings, or the guy was trying to jack you. How much did the wheel move? Did he move it up and down or side to side? To really check the wheel bearings, you need to move the tire up and down. If it moved say 1/4 to 1/2 inch, this is normal. If it moved an inch or more, then I would suggest you make your peace with God if you are going to drive it much before either getting it fixed or trading it off. With that problem, and with your overheat problem, it may be time to trade it off, even if you loose money on it. Had I known all this when you first started asking questions on here, I might have suggested getting rid of it to begin with. Kind of depends on your situation and pocketbook, but some kind of change is definately in order!

i can tell you though, i have been dealing with cars for the past 14 years and have never seen a seized wheel bearing. i have seen some really tore up bearings, but never siezed. it will make a really loud scraping / rumbling type sound when it gets really bad. or it will cause a vibration while driving higher speeds.

Go to autozone, pay the $15 for wheel bearings, $5 for hi-temp grease, and replace them. If you don't have a Haynes repair manual already, get one. You can also pose your question at automotiveforums.com.what was the ford car model that the taurus replaced ?
bearing free play is a bad thing. It will throw off your alignment, cause your car to dart to the side with the bad bearing (when really bad), and heat and possibly warp your rotors on the side with the damage.Your tire will not fall off if the bearing goes completely out, but your tire will become very loose and tilt to the side. If driving at any higher speeds and the bearing goes out, the tire will move back and forth about 1 to 1 1/2 inches causing you to dart into other lanes if not anticipated.

what was the model name of the silver aston martin james bond drove in goldfiner?
I would fix this problem as soon as you can. Places like midas and such will run about 100 dollars to fix. If you go to checker and buy the bearing it will cost you about $20 for the bearing set, and $6 for the bearing grease. It should take you about 20 minutes to fix. 10 for me to fix.

regarding pygmybilly's answer, 1/4 to 1/2 inch endplay in the bearings is NOT acceptable. You will find no tolerances like that in any repair manual or service bulletin. No offense to Mr. pygmybilly.
